Sketching in Australia

Finished drawings begin with sketches. Sketching from life is an effective method for understanding form and proportion. We constantly make corrections to our drawings and they begin to make sense. Or not. Then we try again. If you haven't drawn a gray kangaroo before--I hadn't--their proportions feel odd. Sketching animals in motion allows us to understand behavior. Drawing on-site includes not only our subjects, but the air, scents, sounds, light, accompanying birds and vegetation, and it cements the entire experience in our brains. The sketch may not be a "good" one, but that's not always the goal. Learning something new about your subject, media or technique, or simply enjoying yourself, makes for a successful sketch outing.
